Thursday, March 31, 2011Silly Site o' the DayAn unexpected 11-hour day leaves me too tired to do much more than pass along a silly site and go to bed. Take it away, George Takei!:
Via my first husband. Wednesday, March 30, 2011Silly Site o' the DayStill playing catch-up with blogs, although at least I'm down to under 1000 posts to scan through. And look, Susie found another manifesto, called the Programming Manifesto. It'd probably be even funnier if I'd ever seen Pulp Fiction.
Tuesday, March 29, 2011Silly Site o' the DayThanks to Robin, it's all apps and animals today! Here's a clever video imagining a Michael-Bay directed movie version of Angry Birds:
Naturally, the female character has no lines. And apparently the cobra who escaped from the Bronx Zoo has a Twitter feed. Monday, March 28, 2011Silly Site o' the DayVia Mark Evanier, the New Yorker appears to have solved the mystery of parsing a Time-Warner cable bill.
Sunday, March 27, 2011Silly Site o' the DayWell, it took the better part of my day (Robin says it took me more time than it took us to do our taxes), but my ironing is finally done. I mean, I ironed the shirt I wore at the office holiday party back in December. Whew! I want to celebrate with some Jedi Badminton:
Very clever use of After Effects. Via The Mary Sue. I go collapse now... Saturday, March 26, 2011Silly Site o' the DayA nice relaxing (if cold) day today, during which I mostly stayed away from the internets. But if I'd gone on, I might have seen a funny error message in multiple dialects, like Mark Evanier did.
Friday, March 25, 2011Thursday, March 24, 2011Silly Site o' the DayToday's a milestone birthday for my Mom, which we'll all celebrate after she returns to New Jersey in about a month or so. Since my Mom is still in the Land of Dial-Up and has no time for nor interest in Facebook and the like, I'll be doing things the (relatively) old-fashioned way and actually using the telephone later today. On the other hand, I'll probably call her from the smartphone, so I'm not all that backward. I hear tell Mom still reads books! So maybe she'd like this site featuring reusable cover art in historical novels (one of her preferred genres). Via Arthur.
Wednesday, March 23, 2011Silly Site o' the DayBack to Top Chef in a minute, but first, LOLFOODZ. Via BoingBoing. Update: Via My Food Looks Funny, the source is probably this site, Potabo.
Tuesday, March 22, 2011Silly Site o' the DayWow, William Shatner is 80 years old today; seems like just yesterday he was a mere 75. Here's a few celebs wishing him a happy birthday:
I never realized Jason Alexander did such a spot-on impression. Via BoingBoing. Monday, March 21, 2011Sunday, March 20, 2011Silly Site o' the DayWith our taxes and electronic madness out of the way, I'm trying to catch up on other things, like blog reading and ironing, neither of which it seems will ever end. Robin's catching up on sleep, where I probably should be. I think we might want to celebrate today's vernal equinox by doing something like "Oli + Alex," recreating romance novel cover poses. Via The Mary Sue.
Saturday, March 19, 2011Silly Site o' the Day"Our taxes are filed, hoorah hoorah, our taxes are filed, hoorah hoorah..." [/Bugs Bunny] Whew, what an exhausting day! Cable repair tech showed up around 11 and didn't leave till 12:30, he had to pretty much reroute all the cables outside the house (during which time I put away laundry and did lots of general puttering and straightening up). By 1 PM everything was back to where it should be electronics-wise, so we took that as a good omen to get on with the TurboTax. And now (taking a short break in between typing our itemizations and entering the info) we're all finished! It feels like a heavy burden has been lifted, or perhaps that's just me remembering Robin moving our 125+ pound living room TV back into place. In any case, speaking of money, beware payday lender association spoof websites (via BoingBoing)!
Friday, March 18, 2011Friday Cat Blogging*Might as well go for broke and throw up some photos! Here's Amy in all her upside-down cute glory:
![]() And Datsa giving Robin the stink-eye: ![]() Oh, I also mentioned that I went to a fun place last weekend, at which I took photos. Here they are at last. Barry "Ampersand" Deutsch (whom I've known at least 20 years) was in town and invited some blogger and reader friends to lunch, and here's the group shot that Robin was gracious enough to take: ![]() From left to right: Deborah Feldman, Amanda Marcotte (I finally met Amanda, I'm so happy!), Richard Jeffery Newman, Barry, and a terrific young guy named Lewis (or Louis) who's like 19 chronologically but 40 in terms of wisdom and smarts. My back is to the camera, and I really don't like my new shearing, I can't wait for the hair to grow out a bit even if it is grey. Here's another shot, which I like because you can see more of Deborah's lovely punim and Amanda's smiling: ![]() And so to bed! *(Friday Cat Blogging is ™ Kevin Drum) Silly Site o' the DayNow that we're connected again, I can proceed with the Doctor Who bits from today's Red Nose Day charity event. Here's Part 1, Space:
And Part 2, Time: Lots of fun. Did I mention our internet and phone is back, thanks to my genius husband? Rudderless Until RobinA rare non-linky post from me via my smartphone, because the landlord's assistant yanked out our cable wire and now we have no TV or net or landline phone. Very much of a pain. He was only supposed to disconnefct dishes not in use; turns out our basement neighbor uses a dish he took. Fun fun fun! Update: Have I mentioned my husband's a genius? The smartphone wasn't working either, as it kept searching for the network (which still exists, there was just no connection) and, not finding it, got caught in a constant self-reboot loop. Once Robin got that to stop, he went to work on figuring out how to connect the router and landline phone base to our bedroom TV, which is connected to the system via a different cable. So we have our internet and phone back; the only (temporary) casualty is the living room TV and DVR. I'm not going to lose any sleep over not being able to record Bill Maher.

Thursday, March 17, 2011Silly Site o' the DayIt's after midnight in England (heck, it's nearing that hour here), and that means Red Nose Day! Looking forward to posting some good videos after they're aired, but for now, why not nose-ify your Facebook photo? I did...
Wednesday, March 16, 2011Silly Site o' the DayToday is my godson Jonny's birthday, so I wanted to dedicate today's Silly Site to him. He might not get the specific allusions of this bit, but I'll bet his mom, my cousin Terri Ann, will. 'Cause, you know, it's about moms too. Via BoingBoing.
Tuesday, March 15, 2011Silly Site o' the DayDarn these 11-hour days, now my foot hurts again. To bed shortly, but first, for those of you who have ever wondered what Inception might look like if done by Dave Malki:
Via BoingBoing. Monday, March 14, 2011Silly Site o' the DayHey, let's have some fun with π for π Day (3/14)! Via Wil Wheaton. Oh, and the foot continues to improve, I've started walking almost-normally again, despite a lot of unexpected walking in Manhattan yesterday (more about which another time).
Sunday, March 13, 2011Silly Site o' the DayVia BoingBoing, it's Carl Sagan meets the Isaiah Mustafa Old Spice ads:
![]() Hope everyone remembered to move their clocks forward! Saturday, March 12, 2011Silly Site o' the DayHalf a day at the office, then shopping and other errands, and my foot is feeling it but overall definitely getting better. Meanwhile, Rob has informed me that there's an update to the Angry Birds version we have on our desktops (our phones aren't powerful enough to run it properly), which brings me to this playable Angry Birds cake via My Food Looks Funny:
Meanwhile, the Oatmeal examines the relative likability of the different Angry Birds. Friday, March 11, 2011Silly Site o' the DayPosted just about everywhere, but I'm late as usual. The silly bit is, I guess, Daniel Craig made up like a woman, but the message is quite serious:
Plus, I adore Dame Judy, have for years. Friday Cat Blogging*So I was lounging about resting my foot (which is slowly healing from the side-of-arch sprain, thank you very much) and playing with my and Robin's smartphone cameras, and I took this one with his because I figured it would be less grainy than the one I took:
![]() And it isn't, really. Best to use my for-really camera for stuff like this. *(Friday Cat Blogging is ™ Kevin Drum) Thursday, March 10, 2011Silly Site o' the DayFoot appears to be healing, but slowly, always too slowly. The rain probably isn't helping. This one goes out to Martha (via Robin): How to knit your very own Royal wedding.
Wednesday, March 09, 2011Silly Site o' the DaySomething weird has happened to my foot, it's been as if in mid-cramp mode for about 24 hours now and effectively I can't walk on it at all. Not to mention the pain. Nonetheless, I had lunch with "Dexter Fong" from Firesign chat today, which reminded me that I've wanted to post this video for awhile:
Firesign Theatre: Duke of Madness Motors from DANGEROUS MINDS on Vimeo. Now back to bed with my horrid little foot... Tuesday, March 08, 2011Silly Site o' the DayIn honor of National Women's Day, I'm passing along the link found at the Hathor Legacy, entitled How to be a Chauvinist Gamer Dude. I'm glad words like "chauvinist" still exist, I'd have thought that would have been lost as us second-wave feminists got older. I'm disappointed my job and other life-things mean I can't blog more, not just in general nowadays but specifically today and this month. I miss doing Estrogen Month, talking about new-to-me feminist blogs and so forth. But I encourage readers to go find your own, there are so many wonderful ones out there!
Monday, March 07, 2011Silly Site o' the DaySo, how do you choose a typeface? Maybe this chart (via BoingBoing) will help.
Sunday, March 06, 2011Silly Site o' the Day/Belated Friday Cat Blogging*Combining two tasks to save time. Via The Awl, England's Cravendale Milk company wonders what would happen if cats evolved thumbs:
Apparently they'd all turn into scruffy-boy cats. Which might explain why Datsa is being such a misery of late, keeping us up at all hours of the night like a petulant infant, meowing loudly without end. Perhaps he's started his scruffy-tomcat evolution... ![]() "Who, me?" *(Friday Cat Blogging is ™ Kevin Drum) Saturday, March 05, 2011Silly Site o' the DaySpeaking of Star Wars, might as well get this Silly Site out of the way. Via BoingBoing.
Friday, March 04, 2011Silly Site o' the DayLook, I've been pretty busy at work, so I have no idea why everyone is obsessed with Charlie Sheen lately. Heidi attempts to enlighten us with the Sheen Family Circus, and Robin just pointed me to this Sheen Wars mash-up:
So um, now I know, I guess. Thursday, March 03, 2011Silly Site o' the DayI think I'm starting to spend too much time at work, as my coworkers have started inadvertently leading me to Silly Sites. For instance, one recommended Deadspin, which I'd never heard of before...
Wednesday, March 02, 2011Silly Site o' the DayIn busy mode again! Although I'm still trying to find time to go on the smartphone and use the Twitter and the Facebook. I wonder, as does Arthur, if this Breakup Notifier is for real.
Tuesday, March 01, 2011Silly Site o' the DayWhite Rabbits, and laissez le bon temps whatever! Oh no wait, that's next Tuesday. I'm confused, IHOP free pancake day is today but Shrove Tuesday isn't for another week? And my mom's flying back to New Jersey before Passover this year? Gah, the world's turned upside down! at least we can still count on the preparations for a Royal Wedding. Complete with sick bags! Via the Awl.
