I remember when I was younger and political disagreement meant "both" sides (and there have always been more than two, just not in terms of actual power in this country in my lifetime) knew what they were doing but had different ways of doing it. Then I graduated college, the '80s came along, and suddenly one side wanted to govern but the other just wanted to tear everything down and enrich themselves. And when one side was in power it governed and things weren't perfect but at least stuff moved forward, then the other side was elected and we plunged back into debt and despair and inequity because they had no interest in doing anything but making themselves and their friends richer. This past four years have been that in overdrive, as grifter after grifter was put into place to destroy the very departments they were supposed to oversee, in plain sight, and our only saving grace was that they were so bad at everything they couldn't ruin it entirely. We finally have a competent and caring government in place again. I can't tell you how much value I place in just-plain competence. It sucks to have to clean up your predecessor's mess, I've done it myself in more than one job, but it can be done, and it's started now, and people's actual lives will be the better for it. I was so happy when I heard my personal motto coming from the mouth of our new president - "leave the place better than you found it." It's like a whole bunch of bad design fails are going to be shamed then fixed.
