Silly Site o' the Day

Well, that's better, I actually got a few shirts ironed this evening before I ate. Maybe that's the way to go about it - I get ironed shirts and wind up eating less because it's later. A few more tops and I'll be able to get on with my reading. Maybe I should take Wonder-Tonic's advice and just read the bar codes (which I could not seem to translate back into the books).

I'm definitely not the kind of buyer he or she is looking for. Read the whole thing, bearing in mind the entire time the vast chasm of difference between concept and execution. Via Colleen Doran.

Silly Site o' the Day

Psyched for the Oscars tomorrow? I can't wait to watch the Independent Spirit Awards when I wake up (don't think I'll be tuning in at 10 PM today). I know my ex must be gearing up, as he passes along this teaser trailer:

Apparently the movie was supposed to be released this past Friday; Steve, I expect a follow up report!

Silly Site o' the Day

Wow, am I behind in things! I mean, I'm caught up in some areas but shockingly behind in, for instance, blog reading. On the other hand, I have a few Silly Sites saved up, so at least I can continue posting new content every day. Like today's BoingBoing-linked site of Hundreds of Tourist Photos Weaved into One, times 18. Inspiring! Maybe I should try doing this with the LOVE sculpture on the corner where my office building is.

Silly Site o' the Day

With the brief thaw comes a feeling of some accomplishment as I "get through" things on my to-do list. Still wish I had more time for reading, though (I can't read during my express bus commute as it brings on motion sickness). To that end, and because I know it'll drive my ex-husband the librarian crazy ("they're not sorted by the Dewey Decimal system!"), here's a fellow who's Organizing the Books:

Silly Site o' the Day

It's going to be a long workday today (you can probably tell that since I'm already up and dressed for work), so I'm not sure what kind of shape I'll be in. Therefore, I'm fudging a little on today's Silly Site, presenting another brilliant strip from Randall Munro:

Replace "flying car" with "jetpack" and that's pretty much me. Now I'm going to pack my smartphone and iPod for the journey into the city.

Silly Site o' the Day

I was devastated to hear about the sudden death of Dwayne McDuffie, a very talented comic book writer but oh so much more, as a quick perusal of various websites extolling him will reveal. To me, he was a supportive fellow traveler, particularly when I was active with Friends of Lulu, and he delighted me when I found out that he liked the Firesign Theatre. But he was also super-smart, holding advanced degrees in some sciences that I don't remember at the moment. And I think he would have gotten all of the jokes in today's Silly Site, via another scientist (PZ Myers), which is a parody of science journalism. I'll miss the heck out of Dwayne.

Silly Site o' the Day

All in all, today's snow wasn't that bad, but I still find myself drained. I think I'm going to take a few days' break from sticking photos on my Gmail contacts, it's far more time-consuming than I'd thought it would be. I need all the energy I can get lately! I mean, WTF, you know? Speaking of, WTF is my WTF Generator?

Silly Site o' the Day

Wow, where did the day go? I've spent most of it updating my Gmail contacts list which syncs with my smartphone, including finding photos of my family and friends, with which I'm only halfway through. But my contacts are now much more organized than before, one contact per person instead of the 2-3 dupes I had for some people, everything just about as tidy as I want it. Speaking of pretty photos, Laura links to a bunch from a very cool NYC locksmith whose building I now really want to visit, once the weather is warmer again...

It was all sunbeams this afternoon, as the weather showed some calm before the coming storm, and Amy decided to play with the Kickaroo:

Datsa, on the other hand, is too mature for those sorts of things:

Datsa sticks out his tongue

Erm, well, perhaps not all that mature after all...

Silly Site o' the Day

Valentine's Day may be over, but we still haven't had a chance to properly celebrate, what with Robin being sick and all (and me sick before that), so I'm still making candy hearts, at least online, with the ACME Heart Maker (via Regretsy).

Silly Site o' the Day

Everyone seems to be talking (as in "just not shutting up") about Watson, the IBM super-duper-compuper, er, computer that "beat" two champions in a couple of Jeopardy! games aired this week. Via Mark Evanier, Slate has the lowdown on how Watson failed to perform in other game shows prior to getting its act together:

Silly Site o' the Day

Via BoingBoing, I'd love to go back over old photos of me as a kid to see if I could recreate them complete with clothing, background, etc, like Back to the Future (or is it Forward Into the Past?) does. As it is, I'll consider it a major accomplishment if I get through enough of my iPhoto's facial recognition feature to fill in photos for most of my email/cell phone contacts.

Silly Site o' the Day

Well, that was a football game. All in all, I think the English football games this weekend were much more fun to watch. Even the Super Bowl ads were kind of meh - I liked the Coke ones, but nothing else really stood out. I'm pretty sick already of FOX's plugs for its own shows, though, which brings me to Ugly Sitcom Husbands with Hot Sitcom Wives (via the Awl), a TV trope that's always niggled at me. I think it's done for the same reason as you see a lot more ugly male characters than ugly female ones in superhero comic books; the people who make these things are by and large so used to objectifying women and seeing men as proxies for themselves that society much more easily accepts schlubby husbands with attractive wives than schlubby wives with attractive husbands. Pity, that.

So apparently there's this big American football game going on tomorrow, and ESPN is on the case with plenty of snack food!

Remember Amy and the balloon? Believe it or not, the balloon's still hanging around after two months, but it finally started deflating today, the string coming just low enough for Amy to reach and play with. Naturally, I had to take video:

And just as naturally, she refused to perform on cue. So most of the video winds up being my voice. Ah well...

Silly Site o' the Day

I don't care whether or not the groundhog saw its shadow, I can't even see my blasted steps and driveway for all the ice. I hate, hate, hate being trapped in my house, especially on a day when I was set to go to work. We're all doomed, I tell you. Why isn't this one of the apocalypse scenarios (via io9)? Also, via Jill:

Going to try shoveling again in about half an hour...
