Visited Mom today, and the drive exhausted me more than I thought, so we ordered in (meh) and watched LaLa Land on HBO (extremely meh). Among other disappointments, no newspaper headlines in the movie (via Laughing Squid). Also no real happy ending, everyone (at least every woman) whisper-sang instead of actual singing, it was like the director had seen lots of old musicals from which he borrowed any number of tropes but didn't quite get what made them so wonderful. I would love to have had John Legend play the male lead instead of a way-too-infrequent supporting character, could someone make a musical starring him instead?
