It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. COVID-19's Delta variant seems to be surging everywhere now, including NYC, but I braved the odds, wore a mask, and went into Manhattan for the first time since March 2020 to have lunch with a couple partners I support (one of whom is retiring next month) and see the remains of my old workstation in what felt like a Saturday in the sparsely-populated office. I retrieved a few things still in my locker and desk drawers, said hi to a couple other office mainstays, availed myself of the facilities right near "my" desk for old time's sake, then caught the express bus back, masked pretty much the entire time except when outside. So many hotels on the east side of midtown NY all boarded up now, but eateries are still alive and kicking. It'll be interesting to see what survives now that we're deep into round two of this battle. I also appear to have a touch of stomach bug, possibly something I ate, so I've been sticking pretty close to the reading room since I got home, and decided to forgo the exercise bike today. I'd rather watch Olympians do all that body movement anyway, amidst some Japanese-created dioramas.
