Two milestones were noted in our national pastime yesterday, as Barry Bonds and his steroids tied the all-time home run record of Henry Aaron and Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player ever to reach the 500-home-run mark. The videos are at the official MLB site, which has improved by leaps and bounds since the last time I tried to use it. Their Gameday app in particular, where you can follow play-by-plays charted without streaming pictures or sound so you can have it on at work, works much more smoothly. Most amusing sidebar to me was reading about the scuffle that ensued when a Rutgers student (yes, my alma mater, it figures) retrieved Rodriguez' home run ball, the return of which he and Rodriguez' people are in the process of negotiating. We probably won't know the outcome of that one until at least tomorrow, when the lawyers all return to work.
But all the real-life crap aside, the poetry of the game lives on, and it was really great to see the joy in Rodriguez face as I watched history being made with my ComicMix friends at Mike Gold's birthday bash.
