We're not talking about natural semantic evolution, but of Orwellian-level contortions. One example among many has been the so-called USA PATRIOT Act, enacted during a time of heightened fear and little oversight, when many in Congress fervently hoped and prayed (in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11) that they could trust those in power, even after that power was questionably acquired. Understandably, a number of those Congresscritters want to make amends for theirpanicked idiocy grievous oversight. Today in Open Source Politics , Laura Poyneer aka Al-Muhajabah has good news about a bill introduced on September 24: HR3171, the Benjamin Franklin True Patriot Act, which would repeal major sections of the USA PATRIOT Act. It'll be nice to actually have a word like "patriot" signify what it's supposed to again, rather than this Humpty-Dumpty "it means just what I choose it to mean" bullshit.
